A GFI receptacle is a must-have in all bathrooms, kitchens and exterior applications. Electrical codes require any plug to be a GFI in all bathrooms, any outdoor plug and in kitchens where a plug is withing 6 feet of a water source.(which in most cases is any plug located at countertop areas.) Most older homes are not updated with this safety device, but can be easily installed.
Tools & Materials
- wire stripper
- needle-nose pliers
- screwdriver
- electrical tester
STEPS
- Shut off power to receptacle to be changed. (Circuit breaker located in electrical panel)
- Remove cover and test receptacle to make sure power is of.
- Remove the receptacle and wires
- Attach wiring to new GFI. ( Ground wire to green screw, Black wire to Hot side, white wire to neutral side). Make sure you attach wiring to “line side”. The GfI will be labeled which terminals are line and load, as well as hot side and neutral side.
- Install GFI and cover, turn power back on.
- Test GFI by pressing the test button, when it trips, press reset and you are done.
